OASIS starts September 26, 2007
God's Mission: Our CallingAs people of God, we are called to follow Christ's mission wherever God has called us to serve. To follow Christ's mission is to be awakened by God's Word, nurtured in our faith, and sent out for our ministry. You are invited to come and hear the presentation "God's Mission, Our Calling" on Wednesday, September 26, 7:15 - 8:30 PM in the newly renovated Schaeffer Center on the Frederick campus of Evangelical Lutheran Church. Our guest speaker will be Mr. Dan Lee, staff member of Lutheran World Relief. As Mr. Lee shares the work and ministry of Lutheran World Relief, he will offer three areas of focus in his presentation: 1) the biblical background for God's vision for mission in the world, 2) information for how to equip and nurture our faith for God's mission, and 3) an invitation to be sent out for our particular ministry. We hope to see you on September 26 for this exciting kick-off for this Fall's Oasis ministry. During the following seven Wednesday evenings, October 3 - November 14, Oasis Classes for adults and Oasis Activities for youth and children will be offered.
See descriptions of classes below and e-mail cindy@twinspires.org to register.
Awakened by God's Word
Hospitality and Welcome: Awakened to God's Plan for our Lives
In this course, Pastor Dave Oravec will share Old and New Testament texts that inform our posture of hospitality towards others. What does this imply for our individual and congregational life? How does this inform the work of the larger church? All are welcome!
Teacher: Pastor Dave Oravec
God's Mission/Our Calling: Awakened by God's Word to Address Poverty
Hunger and poverty have existed throughout history and continue to exist all over the developing world. Even in the US, more than 10% of the population is hungry or at risk. There are an every increasing variety of proposed solutions to the problem from governmental, corporate, and religious organizations, but what does Scripture teach us about hunger and poverty? What guidance does it give us on how to think about it? More important, does it provide any wisdom on how to change it?

Pleasing God: Awakened by God's Word to Grow in our Faith Life
What higher satisfaction is there than knowing that what we do and think is pleasing to God? But how can we, as imperfect Christians, ever hope to please a perfect God? Is it even possible in a world where temptations so often lead us astray? We will be doing a study on "Pleasing God" by R. C. Sproul, which will include a video series as well as a companion book and study guide. In this series of practical guidelines for Christian living, Dr. Sproul clearly identifies the struggles we all share in pleasing God, and offers insights on how to overcome them.

Nurtured in Our Faith
Body & Soul: Nurturing our Faith thru Christian Spirituality, Yoga, & Prayer
As we exercise our bodies, we exercise our souls and open ourselves up to spiritual growth in our lives. In Mark 12: 29-31, Jesus invites us to be balanced in our heart, soul, mind, and body: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength (body). And love your neighbor as yourself." This class will offer a balance between body and soul by combining gentle yoga exercises with traditional Christian resources of Scripture reading and prayer. Come and be nurtured in your faith through gentle, prayerful movement. No previous experience in yoga is necessary. Please bring your own floor mat.
Teacher: Caroline Stevens
Captivating: Faith Nurture for Women
At times, women struggle under the pressure of doing it all - of being a "good servant," a nurturing caregiver, a capable home manager, and/or an excellent career-minded worker. When a woman's life becomes overloaded with too many demands, the heart of her being can suffer. In this class, participants will study and discuss Captivating - a book which invites women to recover their feminine hearts, created in the image of an intimate and passionate God. John and Stasi Elredge, authors of Captivating, cast a vision for the power, freedom, and beauty of a woman released to be all she was meant to be. Participants are encouraged to purchase the book Captivating on-line or at a local book store.
Teachers: Chris Joy and Kim Uzat-Brown

Sent Out for Ministry
The Hidden Clustered Spires: Called to the Ministry of Outreach
It used to be that downtown Frederick was the area known as the "clustered spires" of the downtown churches. Through all the construction and renovation, the downtown center is slowly becoming the area around southern Market St. and the Carroll Creek Canal. This means that our highly visible downtown churches will gradually become the "hidden clustered spires." Without being in the mainstream of downtown activities, how will this impact the outreach ministries of our churches? How is God calling us to "re-construct" the way we think about doing mission work in our downtown neighborhoods? Come and join in this important discussion. Teacher: Pastor Bert Lane
The Lutheran Course on Marriage: Called to the Ministry of Marriage Renewal
This course is for married couples of all ages and all stages of marriage. Ever since Martin Luther and Katharina von Bora renounced their vows of celibacy and made a commitment of love to one another through marriage, Lutherans the world over have embraced marriage as a holy calling and vocation. This course will combine the wit and wisdom of The Lutheran Handbook on Marriage, the example and advice of Martin and Katie Luther, the insights of DVD presenters, and real-life anecdotes of many couples. Come and renew your marriage.
Course materials for each couple: $11.
Teachers: Pastor Charles & Nancy Zang and Todd & Ann Duncan
Parent Power: Called to the Ministry of Parenting
This course is part of a comprehensive parent education and support program of the Mental Health Association of Frederick County. The "Parent Power" Oasis Class will teach parents how to care for their children and help themselves stay ahead of stress, anger triggers, and isolation. Parents will learn how to re-establish discipline, create multi-layered parenting strategies for difficult situations, manage anger and stress, and create healthy boundaries, and communicate with their children. This course is co-sponsored with Families Plus! and the Mental Health Association of Frederick County.
